China and the United States now account for over one-third of global economic output and over 50 percent of global growth. Noting that the world is a global village, Wang said that all parties should unite and cooperate to build a strong fortress to defend global public health and jointly oppose stigmatization of the virus and politicization of the pandemic.
The cooperation between the two countries has never been a case of one party giving favor to the other, or one party taking advantage of the other, said Wang.
"But what is important is that no one should unilaterally shut the door for dialogue at any time," Wang said. "Difference, misjudgment or confrontation should not be allowed to dominate the bilateral relations."
To turn the current dangerous tide in the bilateral relationship around and put it back on the right track, the United States needs to immediately stop pushing in the wrong direction and start taking de-escalatory and remedial actions.
"With the joint efforts of the two sides, we hope to take the relationship back to the right track despite current disturbances and difficulties. This is the best way to honor General Scowcroft," it said.
According to Zhao, China's decision stems from the wrongdoings of the U.S. side. The sanctions, effective from Monday, are applied to U.S. officials, including Senators Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton and Pat Toomey, Representative Chris Smith, and Carl Gershman, President of the National Endowment for Democracy, Derek Mitchell, President of the National Democratic Institute, Daniel Twining, President of the International Republican Institute, Kenneth Roth, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, and Michael J. Abramowitz, President of Freedom House.
